Fiona has drawn upon her extensive experience in the military to provide the mentoring support expected by those leaving - supporting, pragmatic, honest and persistent! She has fused her knowledge of the Land Based Sector and personal military experience to create an outstanding resource for anyone, but particularly those in the military community.
This irreverent podcast is posted by two former Army officers. For this episode, Fiona was invited in to talk about the realities of career change and offer some top tips.

#GATEWAYJOB
A Gateway Job is one where the values, skills and competencies you bring with you from your military career are of greater importance in the role than pre-existing knowledge of the target sector. These are therefore ideal roles in which to start a new career.
Ruralink is particularly keen to link service-leavers with employers offering a #GatewayJob.
VOLUNTEERING
Military personnel are generally not permitted to take on second jobs whilst serving, which can make it challenging to undertake work experience. In the land-based sector, there are countless opportunities to learn new, relevant skills and grow a professional network through voluntary roles. Ruralink Conservation Volunteers also provides a focus for service leavers seeking volunteer roles alongside fellow resettling personnel.
CIVILIAN WORK ATTACHMENTS
This is a brilliant scheme which allows service-leavers to undertake a workplace attachment whist still being paid by the MOD. The hosting employer is responsible for ensuring the attached service-leaver's safety at work and for providing meaningful experience; the MOD is responsible for pay, accommodation and transport. Such attachments often lead to offers of employment but, where they do not, the experience, professional connections, potential refernece and CV entry can be invaluable.
"Over several years, Fiona has always given me invaluable careers advice, or just a shove in the right direction when I needed it!
"I have her to thank for some of the most significant career decisions I have made recently."
