If you are wondering how to find your new leadership purpose across a wide range of middle and senior management roles in the great outdoors, this course has been designed for you.
APPLICATIONS WILL OPEN ON 1 OCTOBER 2023
The course is built around visits to food and farming businesses where we lift the lid on aspects of business such as: supply-chain management, marketing, business planning, strategy, the roles of various key "C-suite" leaders and more. In each case, delegates work in syndicates to conduct an in-depth examination of a particular aspect of the business and then feed back their findings to the course.
The Royal Agricultural University (RAU) has been at the forefront of land management and agricultural education since 1845. Right from the start, it has had strong links with the armed forces which it continues to foster.
The alumni are very active and very well placed to offer support and mentoring. By attending this course, you will gain access to this unrivalled support network and, if you wish, will be paired with a suitable mentor to support you after the course concludes.
The course is being delivered in a well-established partnership between Ruralink and the RAU CPD team where the project lead is himself ex-army officer and a friend of Ruralink. RAU course page here.
Delegates will have up to three personal career coaching sessions in which they will be supported to map their own career aspirations, skills and experience onto rural business opportunities.
Any former or serving member of the armed forces or spouse who is interested in developing a follow-on career in management within the land-based sector, including agri-food, farming, horticulture sustainability, emerging AgriTech and related rural business will benefit from this course.
Recent research has confirmed that veterans find it very difficult to access information and suitable courses about land-based careers and education - it's simply a blind spot in the resettlement system. This course is new and unique: it is the only course in the world aimed specifically at leadership roles in this growing sector.
Delegates do not need any specific academic or other qualifications. You simply need to be preparing for a management career in rural business and have some leadership experience. You may be asked to work in small teams and to present group work informally to the wider course.
The best way to learn and be inspired is to have immersive experiences.
This is a very practical hands-on course with full-day external visits to explore case study businesses. You will meet and hear from thought leaders across a range of cutting edge businesses spanning production through to business-to-business and retail enterprises.
Each week will also include informal, relaxed Q&A sessions where expert panelists will answer questions and debate topics introduced by the delegates.
As holders of the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award, Ruralink has been recognised as an advocate for the military community with employers. The Royal Agricultural University (RAU) is also a signatory, and the Course Director and senior delivery team are all veterans. So, delegates can be confident that we understand you, we know what resettlement feels like and we will provide tailored support for the stage you are at.
Fiona says: "A few years ago, I became aware that many service-leavers saw the only way into this sector was through a long and expensive degree course and this is simply not feasible for most. It is also a huge investment in time and money when you may not be absolutely sure exactly which direction you wish to follow.
In order to remove this barrier, I worked with the Royal Agricultural University to create this bespoke career-change course."
Attendance on this course will give you the confidence, credibility and knowledge to launch your career in the land-based sector, as well as a rich network of priceless contacts and mentors who will help and support you along the way.
We will hear from several former service personnel who have made their successful careers across a range of land-based industries. Each will explain the roles they are in now, how they built on their transferable military experience and each will pass on their individual "lessons learnt".
Perhaps in a couple of years' time, you will be paying it forward yourself and telling your story to the next generation ...
Every individual will be allocated a personal career coach who will work with them to develop achievable action-orientated career goals throughout the course. In this way, all learning will become highly personalised and delegates will walk away with a very clear personally-generated focus on their next career move.
Course listed as "Rural Business Career Transition Course" under RAU (ELCAS Provider number no 1718)

All service-leavers have a fantastic array of transferable skills and experience. However, many find it very difficult to gain the necessary exposure to businesses which would really benefit from employing them.
This course puts delegates directly in touch with industry thought leaders and veterans who've "been there, done that!"
Delegates will also interact frequently with employers providing real opportunities to translate learning and networking into a job offer to take the first step into the follow-on career.
And, as a course, you will develop a supportive peer network which will be of benefit throughout your ensuing career.
You will also become an official alumni of the RAU giving you access to literally thousands of hugely influential sector leaders and fellow professionals working across the sector.
Good quality accommodation is available at the university and also within walking distance in the beautiful, historic Roman town of Cirencester.
When considering what accommodation and food options work for you, please bear in mind that there will be after dinner speakers most evenings. Also, most lunches will be taken as part of case study visits off site.
The cost of food and accommodation is not included in the quoted course fee.
We are very pleased to acknowledge the generosity of the MacRobert Trust who are offering a £1000 scholarship to two attendees per year on this course. This scholarship is specifically to offset the food and accommodation costs and cannot be used to pay the course fee itself.
If you wish to apply for a grant, please note this on your application form or email Fiona for more information.
The course has been designed to give you maximum value at £2400 for the whole two weeks and the wrap around coaching and mentoring programme.
It is registered with ELCAS so eligible service-leavers will actually pay just £400.

Additionally, we are very grateful to the MacRobert Trust who are generously offering scholarships towards the cost of accommodation and food to enable two individuals to attend who might otherwise struggle to do so.

We will then follow up with a telephone or Teams call to make sure each delegate is a good fit for the course. During this call, you may be asked about your future career intentions in order to ensure we can tailor the course experience to best suit your needs.
Once a place is confirmed, each delegate will receive an invoice direct from the Royal Agricultural University (RAU). The RAU will also handle all matters relating to ELC/ELCAS applications.
Convenient university accommodation is available but there are many other local options available. We therefore leave it to individuals to book but may be able to offer local knowledge on an individual basis.
Fiona has drawn upon her extensive experience in the military to provide the mentoring support expected by those leaving - supporting, pragmatic, honest and persistent! She has fused her knowledge of the Land Based Sector and personal military experience to create an outstanding resource for anyone, but particularly those in the military community.
