Fiona says: A few years ago, I became aware that many people saw the only way into this sector was through a long and expensive degree course and this is simply not feasible for most. It is also a huge investment in time and money when you may not be absolutely sure exactly which direction you wish to follow.
In order to remove this barrier, I worked with the Royal Agricultural University to create this bespoke career-change course.
Attendance on this course will give you the confidence, credibility and knowledge to launch your career in the land-based sector, as well as a rich network of priceless contacts and mentors who will help and support you along the way.
Course Outcome: Successful delegates will have the necessary confidence and understanding to effectively apply their previous career experience to leadership roles in the land-based sector.
Course features:
- Built around several case studies of a range of successful businesses
-
- 2 week residential course (no teaching at the weekend)
- Course director is highly respected industry figure
- Wrap around individual career coaching
- Small study-groups in a course of 20 maximum
- Access to the university's specialist library, innovation centre, incubation hub and influential alumni
- Expert teaching and mentoring from leading academics and industry leaders
- Opportunities to network with potential employers.
The best way to learn and be inspired is to have immersive experiences.
This is a very practical hands-on course with full-day external visits to explore case study businesses. You will meet and hear from thought leaders across a range of cutting edge businesses spanning production through to business-to-business and retail enterprises.
Each week will also include informal, relaxed Q&A sessions where expert panelists will answer questions and debate topics introduced by the delegates.
The course has been adjusted this year to include more content for those interested in finding a purposeful role working in the climate change and sustainability area as well as diversification and technology roles more closely aligned with food and farming.
If you are wondering if you can find your new leadership purpose in sustainable land management, ecology, agri-engineering, soil health, carbon management, food and farming any number of emerging related roles, this course has been designed for you.
Any former or serving member of the armed forces or spouse who is interested in developing a follow-on career in management within the land-based sector, including agri-food, farming, horticulture and related rural business will benefit from this course.
Recent research has confirmed that veterans find it very difficult to access information and suitable courses about land-based careers and education - it's simply a blind spot in the resettlement system. This course is new and unique: it is the only course in the world aimed specifically at leadership roles in this growing sector.
Delegates do not need any specific academic or other qualifications. You simply need to be preparing for a management career in rural business and have some leadership experience. You may be asked to work in small teams and to present group work informally to the wider course.

DownloadWe will hear from several former service personnel who have made their successful careers across a range of land-based industries. Each will explain the roles they are in now, how they built on their transferable military experience and each will pass on their individual "lessons learnt".
Perhaps in a couple of years' time, you will be paying it forward yourself and telling your story to the next generation ...
The course includes business theory, lectures on the current UK and global business context as well as a range of visiting speakers from industry who will show how the theory and context combine in real-life practice.
You will progressively put this practical case study experience in the context of study of current issues around food production, land management and the UK economy.
Get a flavour by watching the course leader, Professor John Wibberley, give a micro lecture in the attached video (recorded online during Covid lockdown).
All service-leavers have a fantastic array of transferable skills and experience. However, many find it very difficult to gain the necessary exposure to businesses which would really benefit from employing them.
This course puts delegates directly in touch with thought leaders, potential employers and veterans who've "been there, done that!"
And, as a course, you will develop a supportive peer network which will be of benefit throughout your ensuing career.
You will also become an official alumni of the RAU giving you access to literally thousands of hugely influential sector leaders and fellow professionals working across the sector.
The Royal Agricultural University (RAU) has been at the forefront of land management and agricultural education since 1845. Right from the start, it has had strong links with the armed forces which it continues to foster.
The alumni are very active and very well placed to offer support and mentoring. By attending this course, you will gain access to this unrivalled support network and, if you wish, will be paired with a suitable mentor to support you after the course concludes.
The course is being delivered in a well-established partnership between Ruralink and the RAU CPD team.

Good quality accommodation is available at the university and also within walking distance in the beautiful, historic Roman town of Cirencester.
When considering what accommodation and food options work for you, please bear in mind that there will be after dinner speakers most evenings. Also, most lunches will be taken as part of case study visits off site.
The cost of food and accommodation is not included in the quoted course fee.
We are very pleased to acknowledge the generosity of the MacRobert Trust who are offering a £1000 scholarship to two attendees per year on this course. This scholarship is specifically to offset the food and accommodation costs and cannot be used to pay the course fee itself.
If you wish to apply for a grant, please note this on your application form or email Fiona for more information.
The course has been designed to give you maximum value at £2400 for the whole two weeks and the wrap around coaching and mentoring programme.
It is registered with ELCAS so eligible service-leavers will actually pay just £400.
ELCAS info: RAU Provider number 1718; "Rural Business Career Gateway"
Additionally, we are very grateful to the MacRobert Trust who are generously offering scholarships towards the cost of accommodation and food to enable two individuals to attend who might otherwise struggle to do so. (See "How much does it cost?")
The course will run as a fully in-person experience in Cirencester starting on 6 June.
We will, of course, put in place such necessary measures as are required at the time, in accordance with government guidance.
